Birthmarks
Birthmarks are blemishes on the skin that are noticeable at birth, or shortly afterwards.1
Types of Birthmarks
Some common birthmarks include:
Café au lait spot: Usually oval in shape, with a light brown or milky coffee color (hence the name).
Congenital nevi: Nevi are moles or pigmented lesions that can sometimes grow dark coarse hair.
Hemangiomas: These are red, soft raised marks, such as strawberry mark. They usually decrease in size on their own, but in some cases the skin may become stretched.
Port-Wine Stains: These birthmarks are large red or pink patches sometimes called ‘stork bites’. They are caused by abnormal bleeding of blood vessels in the affected area. f left untreated they may eventually get darker.
